Rain in the Face, a warchief of the Lakota tribe, joined Sitting Bull in 1876 and went with him to Little Big Horn River.

Rain in the Face (1835-1905) was a warchief of the Lakota tribe. In 1876, he joined Sitting Bull and went with him to Little Big Horn River. It was later said that at the subsequent battle on June 26 at the Battle of Little Big Horn, after defeating Thomas Custer and his band, he cut out Custer's heart. American poet Henry Wadsworth Longfellow (died 1882) wrote a poem that popularized this detail. This image, which is based on an 1885 photo by David F. Barry, dates to 1896.
