The Countess of Barry. Madame du Barry (1743-1793) was a courtesan and mistress of Louis XV of France. Her public unpopularity had a negative impact on the standing of the monarchy. Banished from court after the death of Louis XV, she was executed by guillotine as a counter-revolutionary in 1793.
