Coastal lagoons, satellite image. North is at top. Vegetation is red and water is blue. This area is on the western coast of Mexico's Yucatan Peninsula. The mainland is in the lower frame, with a series of lagoons on the coast. The land at upper right is the western part of a long barrier island, Isla Del Carmen, which protects the large Terminos Lagoon behind it (only partially seen). A town (white) is on the western tip of the island. Between the island and the mainland is a channel leading out into the Gulf of Mexico (across top). The area shown in this image is around 60 kilometres wide. The image data includes infrared wavelengths, and was obtained on 2 May 2002, using the ASTER sensor on the Terra satellite.
