He was inured to allthe sufferings and privations incident to a frontiersettlement at that early day. Possessed of a firm andvigorous constitution, and endowed by nature with astrong, active, and enterprising mind, at the age ofseventeen he joined the first adventurous party whowent to make a permanent settlement, under theauthority of Connecticut, in the valley of was in the autumn of 1769. He was a man of energy and of prominencein his neighborhood, and so peaceful and conciliatorywas his character, his judgment so uniformly correct,that his services were frequently requested in the settle-ment of important interests. He was a director ofthe Lebanon Valley National Bank, and in the Re-formed Church, of which he was long a member, afaithful and efficient officer.
