TheCalaveras Countyof to-day lies along, irregulartriangle, its short-est side on theedge of the fertileplains of the SanStanislaus, both flowing in deep canyons, the drainage of the interiorof the county is accomplished mainly by the Calaveras River and itstributary creeks, none of which, however, extend to the regionof eternal snow; therefore, while this system, with its accompanyingditches, is wholly adequate for milling purposes, Calaveras has, untilthe past three years, been handicapped by insufficient water forpower the year round, in many localities. This need has now been. IKXNIMAN. The geological formation of the county presents many peculi-arities. The predominant rocks, however, are the paleozoic sedimentsof the carboniferous age, giving place, in the lower part, to thesandstones and clay rocks of the lone formation, and, in the higheraltitudes, to igneous grano-diorite and hornblende rocks. The county may be best divided into five sections for more detaileddescription, to wit: The lower, or Comanche-Milton, the Campo Seco-Copperopolis, the Mother Lode, the East Point, and the West Pointareas, all having a general trend from north-west to south-east,except the latter
