Horn in F ca. 1860 Ignaz Lorenz Austrian In 1814, the horn was the first brass instrument successfully fitted with valves. Crooks were retained to select the key in which the instrument is pitched. Valved instruments were built with detachable crooks into the mid-twentieth century.
