Business opened well last week, with a killing frost to clear away the out- door stock, which was getting extremely poor. Eashion week is on and the de- mand for flowers is heavy, as all the stores are having their openings. The large department and general stores all decorated heavily and it aided the flo- rists to have the openings all at once," instead of having them stretched over several weeks, as heretofore. The flo- rists themselves are all decked out in fall attire and the shops are displaying the newest styles in flowers, plants and accessories. Indoor stock is coming on nicely. Roses and carnations are fair. Mums, although not plentiful as yet, are in good shape and a ready market is found for them. In the way of accessories, baskets of all kinds are moving well and by adding bulbs, which are now being placed on sale, the general busi- ness is materially increased. Various Notes. A. H. Bunde, probably the oldest flo- rist in the city, has retired from busi- ness. O, R. Eekhardt Co. received a heavy shipment of sphagnum this week. Busi- ness with this firm is reported as excel- lent. Bids for the park greenhouses were opened September 22. The contract calls for nine houses 26 x 100, complete with heating and boilers, potting shed, etc. These houses will be devoted to growing plants, except palms and tropical plants, of which the board possesses a great many.
