Kidney glomerulus. Coloured scanning electron micrograph (SEM) of a kidney glomerulus, a tight ball of specialized capillaries (red). The glomerulus filters blood flowing through the kidneys for waste products and other substances, passing its filtrate into long tubules leading to the medulla, the inner part of the kidney. The tubules reabsorb much of the filtrate, including essential compounds such as amino acids, whilst the waste products are drained to the bladder as urine. Magnification: x820 at 6x7cm size.
