The great majority of the inhabitants of Hausaland,being now Mohammedans, must perform some ceremonialwashings, but I am solemnly assured that it was alwaystheir custom to wash face, hands, and feet early in themorning, before and after food, and that those in NorthAfrica always do this. I do not remember, however, thatthe people in Nigeria were particular about washing beforemeals.
