Cologne Cathedral was built was built to house the relics of the Three Magi, under the direction of Archbishop Conrad von Hochstaden. Construction of the present Gothic church began in August 15th, 1248 and completed in 1880. In 1996, the cathedral was added to the UNESCO world heritage list of culturally important sites. Seen is the portal's gable. its finial on top depicts scenes from the life of Apostle Paul, who also appears on the keystone of the gable.
