As telephone apparatus became more efficient in convertingsound energy into electrical energy and back again into soundenergy, more and more of those with impaired hearing foundthat they could often carry on telephone conversations moreeasily than they could talk with others face-to-face. Thisnaturally suggested the idea of a portable telephone system as a hearing aid. It was not until about 1900, however, thatan easily portable acousto-electrical system, consisting of atransmitter, receiver and a small dry-cell battery, was madeavailable. 106 Fig. 1.
