Silver gull (Chroicocephalus novaehollandiae) in flight showing territorial display

Silver Gull (Chroicocephalus novaehollandiae) Shoalwater Islands Marine Park, Western Australia Commonly known as "seagull", is the most common gull seen in Australia. It can be found throughout the continent and is found at virtually any watered habitat and is rarely seen far from land. The silver gull naturally feeds on worms, fish, insects and crustaceans but is also a successful scavenger, which has allowed it to adapted well to urban environments where it thrives around shopping centres and garbage dumps particularly those at or near coastal areas. With greater access to a wide range of dietary items, the Silver Gull has been able to increase its population in areas of human activity and the availability of nesting grounds appears to be the only limiting factor to their population.
