Asahi Kindergarten, Minamisanriku, Japan. Architect: Tezuka Architects, 2013. Interior view during class.

Designed by Takaharu and Yui Tezuka of Tezuka Architects, the kindergarten was built to replace the nursery school that was completely destroyed by the tsunami at Minamisanriku, in Miyagi Prefecture. The project, which was funded by UNICEF’s Japan Committee, was constructed with Japanese red cedar trees that were killed by the sea water. The trees have sacred importance, having been planted in 1611 following the tsunami of that same year, exactly four centuries before that of 2011.
