Ashford, Kent, UK. 21st January, 2015. Phase 2 of Operation Stack has been implemented due to delays in the Channel Tunnel following the vehicle fire on Saturday 17 Jan. The Operation involves freight vehicles being stopped on the M20 between Junctions 8 and 9 pending police permission to proceed as capacity allows. Other traffic travilling towards the coast is routed via the A20 whilst the London bound carriageway is unaffected. It is currently reported that Operation stack will be in place all day. Operation Stack is used by Kent Police and the Port of Dover to park freight vehicles on the M20 when Channel Tunnel or Dover ferry services are subject to severe delays. Operation Stack uses three phases according to the severity of the situation. This photograph shows Phase 2 in operation whereby lorries are stacked on the coastbound carriageway of the M20 between junction 8 and junction 9. Other traffic is routed onto the A20 between these points.
