He wasmobilized as a Lance-Sergeant, and crossed toFrance with the 4th Gordons in the spring of1915 ; there he was soon promoted CompanySergeant-Major. Early in 1916 he was homeon leave. He rejoined the Battalion in May,and returned to France with a draft in the be-ginning of July to take part in the Battle of theSomme. During this engagement he was re-ported wounded and missing on 23 July 1916,and was later believed killed on that 37 IN MEMORIAM.
