Portrait of Horace-Bénédict de Saussure, Swiss mountaineer and scientist, painted on an electric cabin in a public garden of Chamonix, France

Horace Bénédict de Saussure (1740-1799) was a Genevan geologist, meteorologist, physicist, mountaineer and Alpine explorer, often called the founder of alpinism. His interest in botany and geology led him on numerous trips to the Alps, especially in the region of Chamonix and Zermatt. On 8 August 1786, Jacques Balmat and Michel Gabriel Paccard succeeded, and the following year De Saussure was led to the top of Mont Blanc to calculate its altitude.
