But El Paso has industries of her own and a largeamount of traffic originates here, and the Mexican Centralalso brings from Mexico many thousand of tons of ore fortreatment at the El Paso smelter of the American Smelting& Refining Company. This, by the way, is one of the com-panys largest smelters. The population of El Paso is about 20,000. In additionto the large smelters there are in, or near, the city a foun-dry, and machine shop, extract works, a tannery and otherminor industries. Grapes are produced in large quantitiesin this vicinity and large quantities of grapes and wineare shipped through El Paso. Grains and vegetables arefreely cultivated and silver, gold, lead and iron are mined 13. in the vicinity of this city. El Paso is also a famous resortfor people suffering from tubercular trouble. It is altogether evident that the projectors of the Mexi-can Central made no mistake in selecting El Paso as thenorthern terminus of the system. C. F. Berna, the com-panys commercial agent here, tells me that the outlook isbright for a satisfactory business on the Mexican Centralthis Autumn. It is well to remember that not only does the MexicanCentral have a good beginning on the north, but that themain line ends at a no less important point than the Cityof Mexico, the capital of the republic, with a populationin excess of 400,000.
