Freshly-washed garments on a line outside a government improved house in the townships of Grahamstown, South Africa

Compared to an informal township house, this sturdy, government-improved house (and its 4 neighbours) is built of breeze-blocks, painted to brighten the appearance. The lightweight corrugated iron roof is bolted firmly to the roof joists, which are strongly and properly positioned in the wall tops. White plastic waste pipes are further evidence of a healthier living environment, which the government is striving to improve for all township residents.
