Surveying a site for radioactive disposal. This site, at Laxemar in Oskarshamn, Sweden, is being evaluated for its suitability as a nuclear waste repository. Specific requirements must be met in order to safely store the nuclear waste. For example, the bedrock must be highly stable, unlikely to fissure and non-porous. This is because when the waste is stored 500 metres underground any leakages must be prevented from reaching the surface or contaminating groundwater. It will take 100,000 years before the waste's radiation reaches safe levels.
