Bull American Elk (Cervus canadensis) are on constant alert for wandering cows and younger bulls that try to steal from their harems.
Some think that the common name should be “Wapiti” from the Shawnee Indian language, which means “white deer”. In Europe “Elk” refers to an animal that Americans know as the Moose, so these folks think that American Elk would be more appropriate. However, few Americans have heard of the European Elk, so to them these animals are Elk.
