Passive Integrated Transponder (PIT) tag and applicator.
Passive Integrated Transponder (PIT) tags are used commonly in household pets as a means of identification. The PIT tag itself is only about the size of a grain of rice (smaller than a penny). The tag is inserted using an applicator device with a hollow needle. Once inserted, the PIT tag will cause a scanning device to display a unique ID code and is used to help pet owners identify and safeguard their pets. These tags are also used as a means of identification in other fields such as sea turtle research. PIT tags are injected into sea turtles in captivity or in turtles that are tagged for research. These tags help to identify individuals and are useful for collecting data on growth and reproduction in these reptiles.
