Puckle's Machine Gun (patented 1718) Bizarrely it was designed to shoot square bullets against Muslim Turks and round bullets against Christians. The gun was also known as a defence gun and a puckle gun. It was invented and patented in 1718 by James Puckle (1667–1724) a British inventor, lawyer and writer and is thought to be the 1st gun actually referred to as a machine gun. Some sources say there were only two guns manufactured and that it was never used in military action.
