Thomas. 450 TRINITY, KARTHAUS PIONEERS George Philip Guelich, the ancestor of many people in Clear-field County, and a staunch Lutheran, had reached this place inl8ll. John Reiter, Jr., came with Rev. Dr. Gaissenhainer in1X14; and Peter A. Karthaus and J. F. W. Schnars came in 1815. The Pennsylvania Ministerium was sending out traveling mis-sionaries for two or three months in the summer, in these occasionally visited Venango, Crawford and Erie Counties;hut on account of the Lewis robber bands, did not go throughClearfield and Center TKIX1TV LUTHERAN CHURCH, KARTHAUS, PA. In 1818, Rev. C. F. Heyer, afterward known as a pioneer inthe foreign field, passed through here on his way to the above-named counties, but we have no record of his preaching here. In 1822, Rev. George A. Reichert visited Karthaus and otherplaces in the county, and established three congregations in Indi-ana County. In 1824, Revs. A. H. Lochman, , and X. J. Stroh startedas missionaries to this part of the State, and in 1825 reported 451 NORTHEAST CONFERENCE having preached seventy-eight times, catechised and confirmedeighty, and called attention to congregations at Alleghany, Phil-ipsburg, Oldtown (Clearfield), and Curwensville. Surely thesemen, being from the same Synod as Dr. Gaissenhainer, wouldknow something about Karthaus and also preach here. In 1825, the West P
