Tuberculosis treatment, conceptual illustration. Some strains of the bacterium Mycobacterium tuberculosis (MTB) , which causes tuberculosis, have mutated and become resistant to existing antibiotics. Several carboxamide containing small molecules, depicted here as pliers, show promising therapeutic potential. They can selectively kill replicating and drug-resistant MTB by targeting QcrB, a subunit of the menaquinol cytochrome c oxidoreductase (bc1 complex) involved in oxygen dependent respiration.
