Little Shambles on the corner of The Shambles in the historic city of York in Yorkshire, Britain. The Shambles, (officially just 'Shambles') originated from the medieval word, ’Shamel’ which meant booth or bench. It is the oldest cobbled stoned street and the best-conserved in Europe with its centuries-old overhanging medieval buildings, some dating to the 13th century. Records stated that there were twenty-six butcher shops in the Shambles, also known as the ‘Street of butchers,’ in 1872. The last Butcher’s shop disappeared in the early 1980s. Today, the Shambles is lined with small jeweller shops, arts and crafts, confectioners, traditional English tearooms, and taverns.
