Stomach cancer. Light micrograph (LM) of a section through a mucinous carcinoma of the stomach. Gastric cancer is one of the most common causes of cancer-related mortality. One million new cases are diagnosed annually, accounting for 700, 000 mortalities worldwide. Undifferentiated gastric carcinomas are generally associated with a worse prognosis. Mucinous gastric carcinoma (MGC) is a rare histological subtype of undifferentiated gastric carcinoma, accounting for – of all gastric cancer cases. Tumor cells secrete mucus which is delivered in the interstitium producing large pools of mucus/colloid (orange). Magnification: x 15 when printed at 10 centimetres high.
