He re-ceived his education in the public and private schools of Louisville, and after-wards attended the Kentucky Military Institute at Frankfort, Kentucky. Here the break-ing out of the War of the Rebellion found him. and realizing the need of hispresence at home he severed his connection with the boat and started Jeffersonville after many difficulties he entered the employ of theUnite! States government as a clerk in the Ordnance Department, but re-mained there but a short while, leaving to become connected with his fathersyards. His career in the boat building business has not been one of easy suc-cess, but rather a fight to master the business from the first to the last began as an apprentice and learned every department of boat building byactual contact with the work.
