Due to the tough but fibrous nature of the readily available ola palm leaf early Sri Lankans didn t use writing paper The leaves however were vulnerable to splitting when straight lines were used and a script developed that was comprised entirely of curved strokes This made for elegant writing but must have made carving inscriptions in stone a bit laborious
