Chromite. This mineral is iron chromium oxide, and the only significant ore of chromium, a valuable strategic metal. Chromium deposits worldwide are not common, although chromium appears as an impurity in a large number of minerals. Chromite is always black and occurs both as sharp octahedral crystals and as granular masses (seen here). This specimen is from the from Bare Hills, Baltimore, USA, and measures 85 mm across.
