For early use, sow seed of the early kinds in the hot-bed, or in a box in the house, early in February, and transplant them in the open ground in April, in rows two feet apart and eighteen inches between the plants in a row: or sow in a seed-bed outside as soon as the soil can be worked, if you do not care for real early cabbage. These may be transplanted in about four weeks. For second early cabbage, sow in April and transplant in May. For late cabbage, sow in May and transplant in June, in rows three feet apart and two feet apart in the row. In transplanting cabbage or cauliflower it is important that the plant is set down to the first leaf; that the stem may not be injured in case of frost; be careful not to cover the heart of the plant. Hoe every week and stir the ground deep. As they advance in grovrth, draw a little earth to the plants until they begin to head. To prevent splitting or bursting of cabbage, go frequently over the ground and start every cabbage that appears about to mature, by pushing them over sideways, which breaks some of the roots and checks its growth. To prevent the attacks of cabbage fly on small plants dust thoroughly with plaster, air- slacked lime, or wood ashes freely over the young plants.
