1925 postcard night shot from North Pier to Great Wheel, Palace Theatre and Tower illuminated by green lights, Blackpool, UK

Valentine's Postcard 1353, entitled 'Blackpool by Night from the North Pier'. The colour-tinted shot likely dates to 1925, when the Illuminations returned after World War 1. Blackpool Tower opened in 1894. The Great Wheel opened in 1896 as a rival to the Tower, but, becoming unprofitable, was demolished in 1928. The Palace Theatre, in the centre of the photograph, opened as the Alhambra in 1899. In 1903 the Alhambra, failing to recoup its building costs, closed. Bought by the Blackpool Tower Company, it re-opened in 1904 as the Palace, the name seen on the roof. The building was demolished in 1962, being replaced by Lewis's Department Store.
