Kongobuji temple, interior of Betsuden
Kongobuji temple, interior of Betsuden. The sliding doors were painted by Moriya Tadashi showing scenes of flowers in the four season, as well as scenes from Kobo Daishi's sojourn in Tang Dynasty China. In 816, the founder of Shingon Buddhism in Japan, Kobo Daishi Kukai (774-835) begun the planning and construction of this Buddhist monastic complex deep in the mountains of Koyasan as a place for meditation far from worldly distractions. The Dai (Great) Garan has served as the focal point of the study, training, and rituals of Shingon Buddhist monks from the ninth century to the present day.
