Neither nor any other•critic can prove thatthis amount, which hesweepingly calls ex-cessive, failed toaccomplish its the other hand, there is much positiveevidence that the temperance teachings of thesehooks, so far from killing all interest in thesubject, causing disgust, and doing moral injury, have been and still are productive of widespreadgood. As knowledge of the scientific factsunderlying total abstinence became betterclassified and organized, it was found that thesubject could be adequately treated in aminimum of one-fifth the space in the books forlower grades and twenty pages in high schooltexts. Examination of later books will showthat they practically conform to this estimate. CHILDREN WEARIED OF THE SUBJECT Whenever complaint has been made that. At the Watering-Trough children have grown tired of the subject, inves-tigation almost invariably shows that the fault isnot in the subject matter itself, but in the indif-ference of the teacher or her failure to presentthe subject properly, due perhaps to her lackof training; or to the use of books not adaptedto grade, or of the same book in too many suc-cessive grades; or to the failure of school offi-cials to provide for the teacher a topical outlineshowing the new facts to be taught each year. THE APPEAL TO FEAR Mr. Fergusons final denunciation of thebooks is that their teaching is chiefly negative, appealing to fear, and that little emphasis isplaced on the beauty, nobility, and strength of a temperate life. The injustice of thiscriticism is well shownby such statements asthe following, quotedfrom the very bookswhich he denounces : If well cared for, your brain will do thebest of work for you for70 or 80 years withoutcomplaining. x A body kept pure
