Scanning electron micrograph (SEM) of Immature Hawaiian bobtail squid (Euprymna scolopes). The Hawaiian bobtail squid lives in a symbiotic relationship with a bioluminescent marine bacterium (Vibrio fischeri). In exchange for food, bacteria colonize a light organ within the squid's mantle. Reflective plates within the light organ intensify and direct the bioluminescence to match the amount of light hitting the top of the mantle. In this way, the squid's silhouette is hidden from predators when viewed from below. Magnification x6 when shortest axis printed at 25 millimetres.
