Cartwright's engine. Historical artwork of Cartwright's alcohol engine that was patented in 1797. Edmund Cartwright (1743-1823) was an English inventor and clergyman. He patented a power loom for weaving cloth in 1785 and a wool combing machine in 1789. This engine used alcohol vapour instead of steam to drive the piston (centre), which turned the wheel. Published in History and progress of the steam engine, England, 1830.
