Bosnian Orthodox munk caries box of grapes at the vineyards, near the monastery Tvrdos located in remote area in southern Bosnia-Hercegovina,near Bosnian town of the Trebinje ,120 kms southeaster of Bosnian capital of Sarajevo, on Monday, Oct. 8, 2007. A mystic Monastery Tvrdos, built by Byzantine kings in 4th century, and rebuilt in late 18th century, inhabits 11 orthodox monks whose job is not only to devote themselves to Christ, but also to make one of the greatest homemade products in Bosnia. Dry red wine. In the sunny vineyards of southern Bosnia, close to Croatian tourist resort of Dubrovnik, traditionally dressed orthodox nuns pick extra quality grapes that will be processed my monks in Tvrdos monastery. Monastery owns some 40 acres of vineyards and manages to produce, in a simple manner, some bottles of wine per year. Even though the demand for their wine is very high, monks keep their traditional way of making this product, and do not want to commercialize it. The monastery underground is filled with 100 years old oak barrels where monks keep their extra product. The wine is kept for about two years and than it goes for sale. Priests explained that history of making wine in this monastery goes beyond several centuries. 'It brings us closer to God - in our prayers - wine is transformed to Christ blood and it makes us part of its church' one of the priests said. It is very hard to buy Tvrdos monastery wine. The only shop that sells it - is their own, monastery shop. In their shop it costs 36 Euros per bottle
