As soon as the disease makes its appearance, cut out every particle of it six inches below the affected parts. Get it all out, even if you have to dig the tree up. Burn up the trimmings, and do not leave them in the orchard. Keep the trees well supplied with plent)' of potash, and 3'ou can save your orchard. Do not fail to keep the affected parts cut out as soon as the first sign appears, even if it is necessary to go over the orchard once each day. \ SUMMER PEARS. Smith. This pear is a recent introduction in the South, and in appearance and growth of tree very closely resembles Le Conte. It has borne good crops in our grounds for three successive years. This year several of our three-year-old trees matured perfect specimens of fruit while standing in the nursery row, thus proving it to be an early bearer. It is larger than Le Conte and more uniform in size and color. In form it is obo- vate ; color greenish yellow, thicklv covered with small russet dots ; flavor much like Le Conte but richer and more melting ; it is ready for shipment at least two weeks earlier. We believe it is the best early mar- ket pear that we have yet fruited. Le Conte. Supposed to be a cross be- tween the Chinese sand pear and some American variety. A remarkable grower, large and beautiful ; early and prolific. Fruit large, bell-shaped, creamy yellow, juicy, not very rich. A good shipper ; grown in the South for the Northern markets, where it is in demand and usually brings good prices. Ripe July Please note that these images are extracted from s
