The plants develop very rapidly and the roots of all varieties grow to very large size. It is desirable there- fore that seeds be sown very thinly, and the seedlings should be thinned out to stand from 4 to 12 inches apart in the row, taking the 4-inch distance for the Spanish varieties and the greater distance for the Chinese and Japanese kinds.
