The construction of the Eiffel Tower in Paris. The tower was to be the centrpiece of the 1889 Paris Exhibition that was to mark the 100th anniversary of the French Revolution. It was intended to last 20 years but was saved by the experiments ecouraged by Gustave Eiffel, such as radio communication. It is visited by 7 million people per year. The photo is dated 8th October 1887, just 9 months after the first digging started.
