Large Twisted Vine in the Jungle of Costa Rica

This liana (a type of vine) grew to nearly 5 inches in diameter, and as a result of the anatomy of the vine which caused it to bend and twist, it twisted itself into a knot. The vine twists as it grows in order to wrap around plants and trees, which allows it to access higher levels of the canopy, and thus more sunlight, without having to be as structurally strong itself. Photographed near Hone Creek, Costa Rica.
