According to the mineral statistics of theUnited States, compiled by the Engineeringand Mining Journal, the production of theirmines is increasing. Last year, in spiteof business depression, there was an increaseof $18,700,000 in the value of productionsover that of the previous year, which madethe value of the United States mines for1896 total to over $751,700,000. Gold, silver, copper, coal, petroleum,lime are the most valuable productions theyhave. The gold mined last year was worth$58,660,637, which was an increase of$11,800,000 over 1895. The production ofsilver also increased last year to 56,222,332fine ounces. The gold and silver consideredwas obtained from domestic ore only, andthere was besides a large amount refinedfrom Mexican and Canadian ores.
