Cochlospermum fraseri is native to north-west Australia and is an important source of bush tucker in Indigenous culture where the yellow flowers are eaten raw or cooked. THe flowers are said to appear when freshwater crocodiles are laying their eggs. The fruit consists of cotton-like "kapok" fibres often used as ceremonial decorations. . Parry Lagoons near Wyndham is a RAMSAR-listed wetland in the East Kimberley that provides important habitat for migrating birds.
