In 1864 N. removed to Charleston, Wasatch county, Utah, and in 1867 he served on amission to the eastern states covering eleven months. He participated in the trou-bles that caused Johnstons army to visit Utah and also defended the interests of thecolonists in the early Indian troubles, serving with the minute-men. He also made contribution to the fund to build therailroad station and in various other ways prompted public progress and Improvementin his town and county. In politics he was a democrat and for twenty-five years waspostmaster of Charleston, while for fifteen years he served as school trustee. He wasalso a delegate to the first convention to form the state constitution. In the work ofthe church he always remained active and was made the first bishop of Charleston,serving for thirty years. His death occurred in 1917. Joseph R. Murdock was reared to young manhood upon his fathers farm and waseducated in the schools of Charleston, supplemented by study in the Brigham YoungAcademy, now the Brigham Young University.
