Pages would be rerulred to describe theminute care with which the precious bars of metal weremeasured and compared; plunged in water kept at aneven temperature, (as four thermometers, one at eachcorner of the tank, attested); ruled under a microscope, etc. Suffice it to say that the maximum differencebetween the original and the longest and shortest ofthe thirty standards was three microns* The onenearest in length to the original standard of 1799 waskept by the French Government as the InternationalStandard Metre; for the other twenty-nine lots weredrawn by the representatives of the various nations.
