Santorini Island in the Aegean Sea is a part of a caldera formed by a major volcanic eruption around 1610 BC leaving a mostly submerged caldera twelve by seven kilometers wide with roughly 300 meter high steep cliffs at three sides. The picturesque villages at the top of this high walls are connected by a donkey path along the crater rim high above the caldera with impressive views over the caldera to Therasia and the active volcanic islands in the center of the caldera called Nea Kameni. Lots of flowers are there in May. Die Insel Santorin im Ägäischen Meer ist ein Teil einer gefluteten Caldera, die durch eine gewaltige Vulkaneruption um das Jahr 1610 vor Christus entstand. Diese Caldera ist zwölf Kilometer lang und sieben Kilometer weit, ihre rund 300 Meter hohen Kraterwände stürzen fast senkrecht in die Caldera. Oben am Kraterrand sitzen pittoreske Dörfer mit strahlend weißén Häusern. Seit Jahrtausenden verbindet ein Eselsweg über den Kraterrand diese Ortschaften miteinander. Heute wandern dort einige Touristen und genießen die Aussicht auf die Caldera-Insel Thirassia und die noch aktive Vulkan-Insel Nea Kameini in der Mitte der Caldera. Am Wegesrand blüht es im Mai bunt.
