uarrier's was constructed as the Orphans Homes of Scotland in the late 19th century by philanthropist William village was founded as the Orphan Homes of Scotland in 1876 by Glasgow shoe-maker and philanthropist William Quarrier on the site of the former Nittingshill Farm. Quarrier had a vision of a community allowing the young people in his care to thrive, set in a countryside environment and housed in a number of grand residences under a house-mother and Zion Church is gothic in style with a large tracery window in the north side. It is 100 feet in length and 45 feet wide with a gallery at one end and a platform in a recess at the other. It could seat 1,000 people and was the focal point of the village for many years. The church building was sold to a developer and converted into flats as the upkeep and repair costs could not be met by Quarriers and as such is closed to the public.
