At the rateof one mile an hour, which is as fast as it will be possible to movethrough the throng, taking even the most cursory glance at the ex-hibits, it then requires more than a week, working constantly eighthours a day, to exhaust this building. This estimate makes noprovision for careful study of the exhibits. It is an indication of themagnitude of the whole Exposition. Now for some figures on the construction of this edifi^ce : Its area. ERECTION OF MANUFACTURES Is thirty and one-half acres ; while with its galleries it provides morethan forty-four acres of floor space. The total cost of the buildingwas ^1,700,000. The great roof is the feature of the structure,which makes the strongest impression upon every beholder. Theroof and the trusses that support it are the largest ever built. Thespan is three hundred and eighty feet, and the height to the ridgeof the roof from the floor is two hundred and two feet. Thesenumbers and the statement that the building covers more thanthirty acres give but an indefinite idea of its capacity. It Is esti-mated that five thousand people could live without crowding withi» MANUFACTURES. 9/ the walls of this monster in one thousand cottages, each 25x50feet, which could be built upon the floor.
