Bone Areas, Plate 75.—The plantar surfaceof the following bones forms the osseous planeof the sole of the foot: the calcaneum ; the as-tragalus ; the cuboid; the scaphoid ; the threecuneiform—internal, middle, and external; thefive metatarsal; the fourteen tones of the digits—five phalanges, four phalangines, and fivephalangettes (see page 123). With the excep-tion of the astragalus and the middle cuneiform, they all afford attachments to muscles. Dissection.—Make the skin incisions 1, 2, and 3 of Figure 6, and reflect flaps as indicated. Where the dorsumof the foot has been previously dissected the flaps will have to be cut away;otherwise they can be tied over the dorsum of the foot by strings. 1. Subcutaneous Tissue.—This plane of tissue is thick anddense over the heel and outer half of the dissection area, with. 134 LOWER EXTREMITY. large areola; for the lodgement of fat; over the inner half it isthinner, especially at the hollow of the sole of the foot. Dissection -Bemove the subcutaneous tissue from the plantar fascia, being careful to preserve the vessels and nerves superficial to it Determinethe portions of the plantar fascia and the distal slips of i s middle the skin incisions 4, 4, 4, 4, 4, of Figure 6, and reflect flaps from the re-spective plants and lateral digital surfaces of the digits; expose the plantarcollateral digital nerves and vessels, and the sheaths of the flexor tendons. 2. Plantar Fascia, Plate fascia is a thick planeof fibrous tissue, which stretches from the heel to the toes, ttconsists of three portions : the middle, the inner, and the middle portion, the thickest of the three, has a proxi-mal atta
