Greenwich observatory. Artwork of the Royal Green- wich Observatory, Britain, in the time of the ast- ronomer Edmond Halley (1656-1742). The observatory was founded in 1675 by Charles II who appointed an Astronomer Royal to run it & keep accurate tables of the position of the moon for use in navigation by English ships. Halley was made Astronomer Royal in 1720. He inherited an observatory that had virtually no instruments because the creditors and relatives of the previous Astronomer Royal, Flam- steed, had claimed them after his death. Halley re-equipped the observatory and began an 18-year study of the complete revolution of the moon through its ascending and descending nodes.
