As sug- 166 HOUSES OF THE EARLY REPUBLIC gestions for the famous mansion-house built by Elias Hasket Derby in 1795-1799,the owners collected designs from many sources. The plan made tor it by Bulfinchhas a suite of rectangular rooms across the garden front, approached by a passagewith the stairs at one side. Not satisfied with this, Mclntire, who made the finaldesigns, introduced the innovations which Bulfinch had made elsewhere: the ovalsaloon of the Barrel! house, preceded by the elliptical stair hall of the Russellhouse, making an axial suite of great variety and interest. In other parts of the country the scheme was likewise a favorite. Jefferson,. Copyright by J. B. Lipfincclt Co. Figure 126. Plan of the Russell houseCharleston.
